Kihachi Okamoto’s Battle Cry

One of Kihachi Okamoto’s lesser-known jidaigeki comedies,
Battle Cry

In its original title, Tokkan, it was made under the ATG umbrella as it was petering out of productions in the late 70s.  A brilliant piece of work, imho, this film is largely unknown in the West outside the festival circuit.  To the best of my knowledge it has never seen a home video release, so Criterion would be wise to snap up this sucker.  Featuring Okamoto’s golden boy Nakadai Tatsuya, who I’m sure could be coerced into giving an interview or two about working with the director in exchange for a few minutes in Criterion’s closet.
